Ambassador Austria and Senator Omidvar Discuss Migration Initiatives

30 May 2024, Ottawa. Ambassador Austria met with Senator for Ontario, Ratna Omidvar who chairs the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. The two discussed the recently-released Committee report on Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers Program.
Ambassador Austria shared information on the Philippine government’s efforts to promote the welfare and protect the rights of overseas Filipino workers.
“The Philippines is the only country with a Ministry dedicated to migrant workers,” commended by the Senator.
The two shared information on both their countries’ efforts to address issues that impact migrant workers such as the proliferation of illegal recruitment, third-country recruitment, and barriers to foreign credentials recognition.
Senator Omidvar was an immigrant herself who arrived in Canada in 1981 and a recognized expert on migration, diversity, and inclusion.

Philippine National Flag Days, May 28 - June 12, 2024

The Embassy of the Philippines in Canada joins the nation in celebrating National Flag Days from 28 May – 12 June 2024 for the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with the theme - ‘Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.’
Presidential Proclamation No. 374 (s. 1965) declared 28 May as National Flag Day in commemoration of the heroic 1898 victory by Filipino forces in the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite against the Spanish Army. In recognition of their victory, General Emilio Aguinaldo formally unfurled the new National Flag before the public gathered at the Teatro Caviteño, in Cavite City. Executive Order No. 179 (s. 1994) extended the celebration of Flag Day from 28 May to 12 June and encouraged the country to display the flag throughout this period.
