31 May 2023- In a forum organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Overseas Voting Secretariat (DFA-OVS) on women and suffrage on 23 May 2023, Filipino-Canadian Parliamentarian Rechie Valdez, Member of the Parliament representing Mississauga—Streetsville, Ontario, Canada, shared her experience and insights on women political participation. Joining live from Canada, MP Valdez also encouraged Filipinos overseas to volunteer and be more involved in their communities. She also shared the ongoing internship program for Filipino-Canadian youth which provides them opportunities to work under Canadian Senators and Members of Parliament.
MP Valdez is the first Canadian woman of Filipino heritage to get elected to the House of Commons, and only the second Canadian of Filipino heritage to sit as a member of Canada’s Parliament. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Canada-Philippines Interparliamentary Friendship Group.
The DFA-OVS forum entitled "Beyond Suffrage" is a commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Republic Act No. 10590 and the 86th anniversary of women's right to suffrage. The forum gathered resource speakers from the government and the academe to speak on the milestones achieved in overseas voting and to honor the pivotal role of Filipino women in the democratic process. - END
FILIPINO HERITAGE MONTH KICKS OFF IN CANADA

1 June 2023, Ottawa - A series of activities across Canada were held and organized to mark the beginning of Filipino Heritage Month in Canada. In October 2018, the federal House of Commons unanimously passed Motion-155 declaring the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month throughout Canada.
Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville, Ontario Rechie Valdez delivered a statement today before Canada’s House of Commons marking the commencement of the Filipino Heritage Month in Canada. MP Valdez noted the contributions of almost one million Filipinos in Canada. Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita S. Austria and other Embassy Officers witnessed the statement delivered in the House of Commons Chamber.
Ambassador Austria also spoke at the Global Virtual Call, which was jointly organized by B’nai Brith and the Filipino Heritage Society of Montreal. The virtual event coincides with the end of the Jewish Heritage Month in May, and the start of the Filipino Heritage Month in June. The forum was aimed at celebrating Filipino and Jewish friendship ties, and highlighting the Philippines’ Open-Door policy, which allowed 1,300 European Jews fleeing the holocaust to find safe haven in the Philippines.
Philippine Ambassador Meets with Canada’s Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

31 May 2023, Ottawa - Ambassador Maria Andrelita S. Austria and Canada’s Minister for Agriculture and Agri-food Marie-Claude Bibeau met today to discuss ways and means Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy can complement the region’s efforts towards achieving food security and climate resilience. They agreed to work together to enhance their agricultural cooperation and increase bilateral agricultural trade. Dairy production, urban farming, aquaculture were among the areas of possible cooperation that may be pursued.

31 May 2023, Ottawa – The Philippine Embassy in Canada hosted a reception on 30 May 2023 for the Canada-Philippines Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group (CPIPFG) and eleven participants of the National Philippine Parliamentary Internship Program of the Parliament of Canada.
Ms. Rechie Valdez, Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville and current Chairperson of the Canada-Philippines Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, joined Ambassador Austria, and the Philippine Embassy Officers and staff in welcoming the interns at the Mindanao Hall. Senator Gigi Osler and Senator Yonah Martin of the CPIPFG also attended the event.
