Philippine Embassy Connects Filipino-Canadian Students to OPM

14 November 2022 – The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa led by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Francisco Noel Fernandez III hosted Ugnayan: Karaoke Night as its culminating activity for Pinoy Music Fridays (PMF) at the Sentro Rizal Ottawa on 12 November 2022. Students from leading universities and colleges in Ottawa participated in the Karaoke Night.
PMF is the Embassy’s contribution to the Common Cultural Calendar of the Philippine Posts in Canada (PPC). From October 7 to November 11, the PPC have been posting featured OPM songs in their official social media accounts, on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The PMF aims to promote OPM to the Canadian audience, particularly 2nd and 3rd generation Filipino-Canadians.
The PPC is composed of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and the Philippine Consulates General in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto.

The Ontario Silliman University Alumni Association (ONSUAA) celebrated the Fiesta of Dumaguete last Saturday, 5 November, at East York in the Greater Toronto Area. During the festivities, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Francisco Noel R. Fernandez III of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa challenged Sillimanians across Canada to step up to positions of leadership in their provincial regulatory associations and parliamentary ridings. This call was in line with the Credentials Recognition in Canada (CRC) Project of Philippine Posts in Canada (PPC).
Citing that 2.59% of Canada’s population have Filipino heritage numbering 957,355, Fernandez likewise encouraged attendees to pass on their Filipino heritage to the younger generation in order to sustain the visibility of the Filipino diaspora across Canada.

Philippine Posts in Canada Discuss TFW Program with ESDC

The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, led by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Francisco Noel R. Fernandez III, organized a virtual discussion between Philippine Posts in Canada (PPC) and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) last 3 November 2022 on Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) Program.
ESDC’s Executive Director for Worker Protection and Horizontal Management, Ms. Agata Frankowicz, provided an overview of the TFW Program and informed that there were 10,657 Filipinos who worked in Canada in 2021 under this Program, representing an increase of 43% from 2020 figures. Most of them worked in the Home Child Care sector (25%) and the Food Service industry (12%), many of whom were in the province of Ontario (28%). Frankowicz was joined in the meeting by Compliance Director General Caroline Harès, Integrity Manager Véronique Demers, Sector Policy Director Steven West, Program Policy Director Christ Chevrier, and Policy Analyst Malik.

Philippine Embassy Supports Filipino Cellist Performance in Ottawa

04 November 2022 – The Philippine Embassy led by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Francisco Noel Fernandez III supported the performance of Filipino Cellist, Mr. Mikko Pablo, during the Ottawa-leg of the Canadian concert tour of Silakbo Ensemble’s “Est-Ouest” on 03 November 2022 at the Kailash Mital Theatre, Carleton University.
Est-Ouest is a presentation of contemporary music inspired by the folk traditions of both Canada and Bulgaria. The concept is to connect foreign traditions, to find how they diverge or interconnect, whether by melody, rhythm, dress, dance, lyrics, or instruments, and apply it to modern classical artistic practices to honour the traditions explored.
