FILIPINO WINS GOLD MEDAL AT 2011 OTTAWA DIPLOMATIC ASSOCIATION (ODA) SKI DAY
Philippine Embassy Chargé d' Affaires Minerva Jean A. Falcon and His Excellency Nevers Sekwila Mumba, High Commissioner of Zambia and ODA President, with downhill ski gold medal winner Jacob Banquicio, son of First Secretary Shirley E. Banquicio, at the awards ceremony held in Chateau Laurier on 30 January 2011 following an informal dinner hosted by Senate President Nöel Kinsella and House of Commons Speaker Peter Milliken.

ODA is a non-profit organization of diplomatic agents of foreign countries and members of international organizations accredited to Canada. This year's Ski Day raised a total of $1,500 for the Bhavana Centre for Aboriginal Health.
TORONTO-BASED LABOR OFFICER VISITS OTTAWA

Ambassador Petronila P. Garcia received newly arrived Labor Officer Celeste Marie T. Ramos during the latter's courtesy call at the Chancery in Ottawa. Ms. Ramos will head the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Toronto and shall handle labor-related matters in provinces and territories falling under the consular jurisdiction of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa.

20 September 2017, Ottawa – Ambassador Petronila Garcia welcomed colleagues from the ASEAN Committee in Ottawa (ACO) and the Filipino Community, as well as family and friends of the Embassy of the Philippine in Ottawa at the screening of Sonata by Directors Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes at the Ottawa Public Library on 19 September 2017. The film screening is part of the first ASEAN Film Festival in Ottawa, organized by the ASEAN Committee in Ottawa (ACO), which opened on 12 September 2017.
Prior to the film screening, the Philippine Embassy raffled off some souvenirs from the Philippines while the guests were enjoying light refreshments.
In her welcome remarks, Ambassador Garcia noted Filipino’s talent in film and television production. The Ambassador mentioned some of the Filipino films that recently won international recognition such as The Woman Who Left by Director Lav Diaz, Die Beautiful by Jun Lana, Ma Orosa by Brillante Mendoza, and Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis also by Lav Diaz.
The feature film, Sonata, is about a former opera diva who lost her voice and subsequently her career. Ms. Cherrie Gil, the lead cast in the film, won the Best Actress Award at the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards in April 2015 in Kuching, Malaysia. The film won prizes from various award-giving bodies in the Philippines, including the Gawad Urian Awards, Golden Screen Awards, and Star Awards among others.
Seven other highly acclaimed films from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam are being featured in the ASEAN Film Festival in Ottawa on various dates from 12 to 26 September at the Ottawa Public Library in Metcalfe St. and in Mayfair Theater in Bank St.
The ASEAN Committee in Ottawa is composed of the Heads of Mission of the Embassies of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam in Ottawa. END.

14 September 2017, Ottawa – The Philippine Embassy participates in the first ASEAN Film Festival in Ottawa, organized by the ASEAN Committee in Ottawa (ACO), which opened on 12 September 2017 at the Ottawa Public Library. Deputy Director for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Christian Desroches of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development as well as family and friends of the members of the ACO graced the ASEAN Film Festival Opening Night reception.
Brunei Ambassador Pengiran Kamal Bashah Pengiran Ahmad officially opened and welcomed the guests and introduced the feature film from Brunei entitled “Yasmine.” In his opening remarks, the Ambassador stressed the importance of active promotion of ASEAN culture to enhance awareness and understanding of ASEAN’s customs and traditions and way of life through cultural activities like film festivals.

ASEAN COMMITTEE IN OTTAWA HOSTS FAREWELL LUNCHEON IN HONOR OF THAILAND AMBASSADOR

19 September 2017, Ottawa – The ASEAN Committee in Ottawa (ACO), chaired by Ambassador Petronila P. Garcia, hosted a farewell luncheon in honor of Thai Ambassador Vijavat Isarabhakdi at the Amore Seafood and Grill at Hilton Lac-Leamy in Gatineau on 18 September 2017. Ambassador Israbhakdi will complete his tour of duty and leave Ottawa by the end of September.
Director General J. Ian Burchett and Executive Director Rosaline Kwan, friends of the ACO from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, joined the ACO Heads of Mission in bidding farewell to Ambassador Israbhakdi and his spouse, Mme. Wannipa Isarabhakdi.
