This October, we are celebrating the Museum and Galleries Month (MGM) and Indigenous People’s Month.
Museum and Galleries Month (MGM) is observed every October pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 798, s.1991. It underscores the importance of arousing national consciousness and pride in our rich Filipino culture and heritage embodying the aspirations of the nation, expressed in all media of art as well as historical and religious artifacts.
This year’s theme, “Exhibits and Reflections: Crafting Opportunities for the New World,” encompasses the role of museums and galleries in showcasing art forms as an avenue to interpret various facets of humanity that have always been discussed for years. The said theme aligns with the celebration of 2023 International Museum Day: “Museums, Sustainability, and Wellbeing”, which aims to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on regulating climate, fostering inclusivity, and tackling socio-personal issues.
This October, we are also celebrating the Indigenous Peoples Month pursuant to Presidential Proclamation no. 1906 s. 2009, which is also in line with the 20th anniversary of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This year, the theme "Buhay na Dunong: Pagkamalikhain at Kalikasan" (Living Heritage: Creativity and Nature) highlights how both the Indigenous Peoples’ creativity and nature's richness sustain our living heritage.
