11 March 2025, Ottawa – In observance of National Women’s Month, the Philippine Embassy in Canada hosted a timely and informative webinar on 10  March 2025. The webinar, titled Legal Protections for Filipino Women and Families in the Philippines and Canada, was presented by Atty. Hermie Angeles, a prominent Winnipeg-based Filipino-Canadian lawyer and former Department of Justice official from the Philippines.

Atty. Angeles, who brings a wealth of experience in both Canadian and Philippine law, focused on critical legal topics affecting Filipino women and their families by navigating key issues of cross-border legal frameworks. Through the webinar, Atty. Angeles provided valuable insights into the legal mechanisms available for securing child and spousal support in both the Philippines and Canada, while highlighting the differences and challenges faced by Filipino families in each jurisdiction.

"Understanding the legal systems in both countries is crucial for Filipinos, especially for   women when dealing with family-related legal matters,” Atty. Angeles explained. “This webinar aimed to offer general and practical advice and guide individuals on how they can effectively seek justice and protection for themselves and their children.”

Participants were guided through relevant laws and how they are enforced in the Philippines and Canada. The webinar also explored how the legal rights of Filipino women and children can be safeguarded through various legal channels, with emphasis on access to justice and navigating family law systems in both countries.

The event was well-attended by members of the Filipino-Canadian community. Attendees also took the opportunity to ask questions, furthering discussions on the real-world implications of legal protections for women and children in transnational family settings.

This event is part of the Philippine Embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and protect the rights of Filipino citizens in Canada. By offering educational programs like this webinar, the Embassy continues to support the Filipino community and foster connections between the Philippines and Canada.
