15 June 2023, Ottawa – The Philippine Embassy in Canada, represented by Minister and Deputy Head of Mission, Myca Magnolia M. Fischer, joined Filipinos and Filipino-Canadians in Montreal in a series of events celebrating Filipino Heritage Month and the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.
On 10 June 2023, Ms. Fischer attended Kultura, a 2-part cultural show organized by the Filipino Heritage Society of Montreal (FHSM), led by its Chairman, Mr. Alfonso Abdon, at Maison de la culture de Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal. On the same day, Ms. Fischer graced the Philippine Independence Day celebration and 60th Anniversary of the Filipino Association of Montreal and Suburbs, Inc. (FAMAS) held at Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal, led by Mr. Romeo Remegio, FAMAS President.
Ms. Fischer joined the officials and members of the Council of Canadian Filipino Associations of Quebec (CCFAQ), headed by Mr. Dario Boco, in a Philippine Independence Day parade and picnic on 11 June 2023 at MacKenzie-King Park.
Several local government officials were present to join in the celebration and affirm the significant contribution of the Filipino community to Montreal society. Among those who attended the above-cited events were The Honorable Members of Parliament Anthony Housefather and Sameer Zuberi, The Honorable Members of the National Assembly Elisabeth Prass and Michelle Setiakwe, borough Mayor of Cote-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace Gracia Kasoki Katahwa, and City Councillors Stephanie Valenzuela and Sonny Moroz.
The Independence Day celebration in Montreal was capped by a reception hosted by Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante and borough Mayor Katahwa on 12 June 2023, held at Montreal City Hall where the Philippine flag was proudly raised and displayed. END
