The Philippine Consulate General in Halifax observed the International Day of the Seafarers on June 24, 2017 in recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of Filipino seafarers to Philippine progress. The Mission to Seafarers Halifax, a non-profit charitable organization that helps seafarers, joined the Philippine Consulate General in celebrating the event.
Philippine Honorary Consul Elizabeth Eustaquio-Domondon and Halifax Mayor Michael Savage led the celebration attended by Filipino crew of a ship currently berthed at the Port of Halifax and members of the Filipino community in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mayor Savage expressed his continued support to Filipino seafarers visiting Halifax and the Filipino community.
The Port of Halifax is one of the major ports in Canada and each year, thousands of Filipino seafarers onboard ships plying the Atlantic Ocean embark and disembark at the port. The Philippine Honorary Consulate in Halifax extends consular assistance to them whenever needed.
The Philippines continues to be the world’s top source of seafarers, comprising more than 25 percent of the mariners worldwide. ###
