Filipinos in Canada have spoken. Almost 4,000 registered Filipino voters in Canada exercised their right of suffrage as they voted for twelve (12) Senators one (1) party-list candidate. The results, more or less, mirror the outcome of the elections in the Philippines.
Senator Allan Peter Cayetano paced the contenders for the Senate, by garnering 2,276 votes, or almost 58% of the total votes cast. Other candidates who received more than 50% of the vote include Senators Loren Legarda (2,197), Francisco Escudero (2,190), Aquilino Pimentel Jr. (2,077) and Grace Poe (2,032). The OFW Family Group garnered the highest votes for party list representative with 569 votes.
Over 3,918 ballots or about 12% of the total number of registered voters were included in the counting in Canada, where ballots are cast by mail. The Philippine Consulate in Toronto recorded the highest numerical turnout with 1,971 votes cast, followed by the Consulate in Vancouver counting 1,509 ballots, and Ottawa accounting for 438 ballots.
The counting of votes started at 7:00 pm Manila with the Special Board of Election Inspectors in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa commencing the counting process at 3:00 am and 7:00 am at their respective local times. END
