Ottawa, 11 February 2013 - On his official trip to Ottawa to represent Yukon in the annual Winterlude Festival in the nation's capital, the Honorable Premier Darrell Pasloski with his top local government executives took the occasion to call on the Philippine Ambassador.
Amb. Gatan said that the Yukon, despite its renowned harsh arctic winters, has attracted about 2,000 Filipino workers and migrants, representing roughly 5% of the province's entire population, a demographic development occurring in other Canadian provinces. Mr. Pasloski praised the the members of the growing Filipino community for their significant contribution to the economic development of the Yukon, where mining and tourism are the economic triggers.
Mr. Pasloski presented Ambassador Gatan with a DVD copy of Cold Paradise, a documentary in English and Filipino that offers an insight into the lives of temporary workers and immigrants from the Philippines in the Yukon dating 40 years ago to date.
Amb. Gatan thanked the Premier for his govenrment's assistance to the consular outreach team of the Philippines Consulate General in Vancouver and for being a gracious host to the Filipino migrants and workers. He expressed the hope for expanding relations with the Yukon in areas beyond labor and migration to economic cooperation. END.
