08 November 2024, Ottawa. Ambassador Austria and Prince Edward Island’s (PEI) Minister of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population Jenn Redmond discussed lengthily the impact of the growing Filipino diaspora in PEI. “The Filipino community has witnessed phenomenal growth on the Island,” Ambassador Austria said. Both sides agreed that Filipinos helped revitalize the Province and sustains PEI’s key industries of agriculture, tourism and automotives.

Ambassador Austria conveyed that credentials recognition is a significant matter to both the Philippines and Canada. As PEI faces challenges in its healthcare system, the Ambassador expressed hope that the Province would soon take measures to fasttrack the credential recognition process for those who are already in the Province and ready to serve in their professional capacities.

The two sides agreed to work together to help the community reach its aspirations, including the establishment of a Filipino community center to serve as their home and a place to organize community programs.

Ambassador Austria and her team went on a three--day visit to PEI to meet with the Filipino community and check on Filipinos working in the Province. During the visit, she discussed with PEI government officials ways to address the barriers to recognition of foreign credentials, strengthen the Filipino community and promote trade and investments.

She was accompanied by Consul General Rea Oreta, Officer in-Charge of the Migrant Workers Office in Toronto, Benny Reyes, Trade Commissioner for Canada Mario Tani and former Philippine Honorary Consul in Charlottetown, Leticia La Rosa. END
