19 May 2024, Halifax. The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa sent a team to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 18-19 May 2024. A total of 458 services were rendered, which includes passport applications, legalization, civil registry and dual citizenship applications. The bulk of the consular services provided by the team were on passport renewals, numbering 202. The rest were on legalization, and civil registry.
 
There were also 43 qualified individuals who took their oath of allegiance under the Citizenship Retention and Reacquisition Act of 2003 or more commonly known as the Dual Citizenship Law (R.A. 9225). A town hall meeting was held to brief the new dual citizens of their rights and privileges, and their role under the Bagong Pilipinas agenda of the Marcos Administration.
 
Toronto-based representatives from the SSS and Migrant Workers Office joined the outreach to provide labor-related services and conduct a welfare visit.
 
The Embassy also organized a Kapihan with Filipino international students in Halifax to ascertain their situation and inform them of the Philippine Government services available to international students through the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, SSS, and the MWO.
 
The Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission Myca Fischer and Third Secretary Mary Jaselle Menteer also took the opportunity to visit Dalhousie University and meet with Dr. Balakrishnan Prithiviraj, Dalhousie’s Associate Vice President, Global Relations. During the meeting, Dr. Prithiviraj expressed the University’s interest to intensify its already active cooperation with universities in the Philippines.
 
The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa holds consular jurisdiction over Nova Scotia, which is home to 5,790 Fillipinos according to the 2021 census of Statistics Canada. END
