25 June 2023 – Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita S. Austria joined a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial organized by Veterans Affairs Canada to pay tribute to those who served, fought, and died during the Korean War. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice.
In a moving ceremony, government officials, parliamentarians, and representatives of the youth sector recalled the sacrifices of those who fought in the war, and vowed never to forget their contribution to the cause of peace and freedom.
Like Canada, the Philippines was among the members of the UN command that sent troops to South Korea to defend its democracy and freedom. The Philippines sent a total of 7,420 Filipino soldiers from September 1950 to May 1955, of whom 116 were killed in action, 299 were wounded, 57 went missing and 41 were captured and repatriated.
