07 December 2020, Ottawa – Radio Canada International (RCI), the international broadcasting service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), unveiled its restructuring and transformation plan, which included new programs in the Tagalog and Punjabi languages, as part of its program for greater visibility and an expanded editorial lineup.  The expanded lineup will be launched in April, 2021.

In its news releases, CBC-RCI acknowledged that the Tagalog language is increasingly spoken in Canada and noted that the expansion would facilitate better connection and engagement with its target audience, especially to newcomers in Canada.  Tagalog and Punjabi will join English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Simplified Chinese in the offerings of RCI next year.

Canada is one of the leading destinations of Filipino immigrants. The Filipino diaspora in the country is second only in size to those in the United States of America.

Data from Statistics Canada indicates that the Filipino diaspora in the country is now close to 1 million, with almost half of them residing in the Greater Toronto Area. -END-
