Resident missions of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Ottawa namely, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, marked the 44th founding anniversary of ASEAN on 30 July 2011 at the Vincent Massey Park with the annual ASEAN picnic organized by the Philippine Embassy under the auspices of the ASEAN Committee in Ottawa (ACO).

In her opening remarks, Chargé d' Affaires Minerva Jean A. Falcon congratulated Indonesia for the successful hosting of the 44th ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting and related conferences. She also cited the activities of ACO which help accelerate the community building efforts of ASEAN.

Heads of ASEAN missions gamely led their members in warm-up exercises for the day's highlights which included a volleyball tournament, children's games and ASEAN buffet as well as the eagerly-awaited tug-of-war and awarding of prizes for ACO's 2011 sports tournaments.

The Philippine Embassy was named Best Mission as it garnered the top awards for the ASEAN Bowling Tournament with Romeo Merjudio, Merlita Halili and Terence Halili bagging trophies for High Single Scratch, High Single Series and Junior High Game, respectively.

On 8 August 2011, a simple ceremony was held at the Philippine Embassy to mark ASEAN's 44th birthday and to launch the permanent display of the ASEAN flag alongside the Philippine flag. CDA Falcon took the occasion to read the remarks of Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert F. del Rosario during the 44th ASEAN Foundation Day Flag Raising Ceremony and to acquaint consular applicants with the history and purpose of ASEAN.
